Berg's Certified Organic Blueberries. Established 1991

    About

to About

My family moved to Alvadore in September of 1953, and I have lived on the family farm for most of my life.  My Dad began farming strawberries without the use of herbicides as early as 1954.  In the years to come, I remember him adding tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, peas, corn, green peppers and cabbages as well.  All of this was long before organic methods were thought (much) of.  I am very familiar with LOTS of manual labor, in order to try and control the weeds.  It has been my goal ever since I started the blueberry business to keep my field as weed free as humanly possible, all without the use of herbicides or other chemicals.

'"I come to Berg's every year, as I know the field will be clean."' - Amanda P.

"'I wouldn't even consider going anywhere else but here, for my blueberries.  His are the BEST!"' - Phyllis G.

Here is a (kind of) important detail: I had special help planting the first row of blueberries (the one nearest the road). My own dad - at age 80 - helped me to plant that row, and it was one of his last "official" acts of being a farmer (he gardened after that). For this reason this row of the field will always have special significance for me.

Since this is an organic farm, I am governed by Oregon Tilth, who inspects each year.  As such, I can only use what Oregon Tilth will allow.  So yes, I am organic with a proud background - thanks to my parents.

The Farmer

I live with sun and rain

As I do my daily toil

I am a guardian of the land

I am a steward of the soil.

I know a closeness with the earth

As I till the living sod

For the benefit of man

In partnership with God.

There are just a few rules/suggestions to keep in mind before planning a trip to the farm.

1. Please leave pets at home, as I have several dogs here.  None of them are biters, but they do get excited when other animals show up, and may want to jump up onto your car.  I hope that you understand.
2. Please remember to bring containers to take your berries home in.
3. Before visiting the farm please call the information line at (541) 688-1455 to check field conditions, berry availability, and to ensure that we are open. The answering machine gets updated each morning.
Thank you for your patronage and patience.
